What is HDF (High Density Fibreboard)?

What is HDF (High Density Fibreboard)?

Like MDF (medium density fibreboard), HDF, or High-Density Fiberboard, is a strong and dense engineered wood product. It is manufactured by compressing wood fibers under high pressure, resulting in a durable material.

However, HDF sheets contain more densely compressed wood fibres than MDF, and this higher density makes it a more durable solution for your projects.

Also known as hardboard, our HDF is available in 3 versatile decorative colours.

Key characteristics of HDF

  • Smooth, uniform surface on both sides

  • No grain or knots (unlike natural wood)

  • Consistent thickness throughout

  • Made from sustainable wood fibre sources

Applications

Applications

HDF (High-Density Fiberboard) is ideal for a wide range of different applications including furniture manufacturing (tables, desks, shelving), skirting boards due to its ease of cutting and finishing, and temporary or semi-permanent wall partitions in offices and commercial spaces because of its durability.

Stronger and more moisture resistant than standard MDF, HDF is ideal for areas with high traffic such as commercial areas. While both MDF and HDF can be used for furniture, HDF's higher density makes it a superior choice for high-wear surfaces like table tops or desks, where resistance to dents and scratches is crucial. We've found that HDF holds up significantly better over time in commercial settings compared to MDF.

Long used in furniture manufacturing, hardboard is incredibly versatile, making it also popular in the construction industry.

Furniture

From tables and desks, to shelving and cabinetry, HDF hardboard will not only provide a smooth surface for your furniture, but it's easy to paint making it highly customisable.

Skirting boards

HDF is a popular material for skirting boards due to its ease of cutting and finishing. Whether you're looking to match solid wood or laminate flooring, HDF is the ideal finishing touch to all woodworking projects.

Wall partitions

Due to the durable and dense wood fibre core of HDF it is also a popular choice for temporary or semi-permanent partitions in offices or commercial spaces.

HDF FAQs

HDF FAQs

How is HDF made?

High-Density Fiberboard (HDF) is made by first breaking down wood residuals into very fine fibres. These fibres are then mixed with a bonding adhesive to help them bind together. The mixture is compressed under very high pressure, higher than that used for MDF production, and then heat-cured to create a dense, stable board. Finally, the hardened board is cut into standard sheet sizes ready for use.

How does HDF compare to other materials?

Solid Wood

While HDF lacks the natural feel of solid wood, it does offer greater stability when exposed to fluctuations in temperature and humidity.

MFC

Compared to MFC, HDF is denser, stronger, and more dimensionally stable due to its compressed wood-fibre structure. However MFC is typically lighter and more cost-effective.

Can HDF be used outdoors?

Standard HDF is not designed for prolonged outdoor use. It can be affected by moisture unless it is specifically manufactured as moisture-resistant or exterior-grade board and properly sealed.

Can you paint HDF?

Yes, HDF has a very smooth surface that takes paint well. For best results, apply a primer first, lightly sand between coats, and finish with a suitable topcoat.

Do you offer cut-to-size services?

Yes, we offer a professional cut-to-size service to help reduce waste and save time on site. Simply provide your measurements when ordering.
