Melamine is a versatile decorative surface. Decorative paper is impregnated with a melamine plastic resin. This is then pressed onto a core board using extreme pressure heat bonding.
Usually the core board consists of MDF or chipboard which provides a strong foundation for the melamine sheets using wood fibres.
The melamine sheets can then be finished off with an edge profile to disguise the core board underneath. This creates an aesthetic finish with a seamless sheet of melamine to protect against moisture and damage to the internal core board.
The smooth surface and minimalist look of white melamine MDF makes it perfect for white melamine furniture like tables and shelves.
White Melamine board can also make wonderful shelving due to its strength, attractive appearance and reasonable price. Thicknesses can vary according to your preferred need, and the size of the cut of melamine board.
The resin impregnation of melamine board makes this material strong, durable, and easy to maintain.
Additionally, having a choice of core boards like melamine faced MDF makes it an incredibly versatile material and the melamine coating makes the board easy to wipe and scratch resistant.
Whilst chipboard and MDF are created from wood fibres, a chipboard core tends to be coarser in texture whilst MDF is made from finer material.
As an MDF core is more dense than chipboard, Melamine faced MDF tends to be a lot stronger and more suitable for weight-bearing projects like wall units and cabinets than chipboard.

It comes in a variety of fashionable designs and textures, making it the perfect fit for both traditional and modern interior design styles.
Melamine can also be used as a substitute for wood veneer. Every melamine board has a consistent colouring and grain pattern. It is durable after years of commercial use, easy to clean and won’t discolour from heat or age, making it ideal for high traffic areas. Patterns in veneer are natural, therefore they may be inconsistent and present some natural imperfections such as knots which cannot be easily matched.
Melamine faced chipboard can be painted to your chosen design, whether that's on one side or as a complete cover.
Before you paint your melamine, you'll need to prime it with sandpaper first. If you want to avoid visible brush strokes, try spray painting your melamine for a nice even finish.
