Let’s be honest, when most people walk into a space, they’re dazzled by colour, floored by lighting, and occasionally distracted by a suspiciously squeaky floorboard. But ask any decent interior designer or mildly obsessive furniture nerd, and they’ll tell you about the real magic. It’s in the texture. Texture adds depth, character, and that all-important “ooh, I want to touch that” factor.

Whether it’s a boardroom or a bedroom, getting the right texture in the right place can elevate a space from “meh” to “wow, is this Kevin McCloud's house?”. You may be able to create something that 'works' but if you're seeking perfection I think the texture has to be right too.

Today we’re diving into four of the big hitters Textiles, Woodgrains, Stone, and Metal textures and where they really shine.

Textiles: The Soft Power Player

Let’s start with textiles, the soft furnishings that pull a room together and stop it feeling like a dentist’s waiting room. Think upholstery, curtains, rugs, wall panels… all the stuff you want to 'accidentally' brush your hand against.

In domestic settings, textiles are vital. Bedrooms, living rooms, even those gloriously underused snugs, we need softness to relax. Textured fabrics like bouclé, brushed cotton, or a nice velvet give a sense of warmth and welcome. In the workplace, however, textiles can soften harsh lines, particularly in open-plan spaces.

For me, textiles are the soul of a room, they soften the edges, quiet the harshness, and make a space feel truly lived in which is exactly what you want. Even in a professional environment textiles ensure you're not walking into a sterile space without any character.

Woodgrains: Easy Nature

Woodgrain textures bring a natural, organic feel into any space and instantly make a room more grounded.

I’m personally a fan of woodgrains in living spaces and bedrooms they offer a sense of calm and timelessness. Whether it’s a classic oak or a more contemporary ash finish, they pair beautifully with softer textures like the textiles above.

In workplaces, woodgrain finishes on cabinetry or feature walls stop the place looking like a tech start-up that forgot the outdoors exist. There’s something grounding about woodgrain textures, it’s the perfect way to invite nature inside and bring warmth and authenticity to any interior.

Stone: Solid Style

Now we’re getting into serious territory. Stone is sophisticated and a solid look for most spaces. It’s a favourite of mine in kitchens worktops, splashbacks, even wall panels can benefit from a bit of rugged stone realism.

In the workplace, think reception desks, café counters, or breakout zones that need to look polished without trying too hard. Stone-textured finishes give an air of permanence and quiet luxury, a bit like a posh spa but without the mud facial.

I love how stone textures add bold, brutal lines to a space, there’s a raw honesty in their natural look.

Metals: Sleek, Strong and Slightly Show-Offy

Ah, metal textures. Cool to the touch and sharp in style, they’re perfect when you want to inject a little industrial chic into a space. Metal finishes fit so well in kitchens whether it’s brushed steel, burnished bronze, or something a bit more avant-garde, metal adds edge and elegance.

In commercial environments, metal works wonders for feature details think trims, signage, statement furniture, or that super-dramatic wall panel you can sort of see a distorted reflection in. When used well, metal finishes add a confident, modern feel without tipping into “cold and clinical.”

Metal textures bring a gritty, industrial character that I find refreshingly modern, a little rough around the edges, but unapologetically stylish.

The AR texture is available on 3 melamine decors which can be found here.

So there we have it four textural heroes, each with their own personality and place in the design world. All of the images demonstrating the type of textures were taken from our Emporio Skin collection and showcase some really high quality designs.
