We are all familiar with Magnolia - the old faithful hue that has adorned many a wall throughout the nineties and early noughties.

Whilst we are a nation of neutral-tone lovers - and Magnolia is certainly a neutral colour - you have to admit that it's pretty bland.

As you can see above, magnolia doesnt really offer any variations - it is what it is. Whilst this is perfect for the colour-shy people of the world, even they don't want to get left behind in a dated interior - cue the new popular neutral...GREY!

"But grey is so dull and boring, whereas magnolia is light and airy" we hear you say...WRONG! Grey can be cool, warm, fresh, light, dark, moody...pretty much anything you want it to be, and THAT'S why it is the must-have shade of today.

Grey, however light or dark you go for, immediately adds depth to an interior and makes any furniture or wall art instantly pop. Yet another positive is that literally ANY colour goes with grey. Whether grey is the dominant colour and is paired with an accent, or vice versa, you literally can't go wrong.

Grey is the ultmate chameleon. It adapts to red, blue, pink, yellow, orange, green, black, you name it, metallics too and even looks great against variations of itself!

Believe it or not, lightbulbs have played a big part in the evolution from magnolia to grey. Warmer lighting of the 90's/early 00's went perfectly with magnolia, however, the introduction of LED and whiter toned lights not so much.

This new lighting paved the way for our reigning neutral, grey:

Warmer lighting however, has been creeping its way back into our lives, and guess what, it looks just as good against grey as the whiter light...another reason why grey is the much-loved colour choice it is.

We think it's safe to say that magnolia has had a good run, and whilst it will always hold a special place in our hearts (sort of), grey is certainly a welcome change. With all the different elements it has to offer, what other colour could possibly challenge one that offers so many design possibilities?!
